How to Check if Your Phone Supports eSIM
Quick ways to find out whether your iPhone or Android phone supports eSIM and whether it is unlocked for use with a travel plan.
Before buying an eSIM plan, confirm two things: that your phone supports eSIM, and that it is not locked to a single carrier. Both checks take about a minute.
Check eSIM support
- Open your phone's dialer and enter *#06#.
- If a number labelled EID appears, your phone has an eSIM chip.
- On iPhone you can also open Settings > General > About and look for an EID entry.
- On Android, look under Settings > About phone, or search your settings for eSIM or SIM manager.
Many phones released from around 2018 onwards support eSIM, including recent iPhones, Google Pixel phones and Samsung Galaxy S and Z series devices. Support can vary by model and by country of sale, so always check your exact model.
Check that your phone is unlocked
- iPhone: open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. It should say No SIM restrictions.
- Android: settings differ by brand. Look for network lock or SIM lock status, or ask your carrier.
- If you bought your phone on a payment plan, ask the carrier whether it has been unlocked.
