eSIM guide

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you add a mobile plan to your phone without a physical card. It is the simplest way to get data when you travel.

eSIM in a nutshell

“eSIM” stands for embedded SIM. The SIM is built into your phone as a chip, and the plan is stored digitally. Instead of buying a plastic card and swapping it into a tray, you scan a QR code or tap an install button, and your phone downloads the plan.

How an eSIM works

  1. You choose a plan for your destination and complete your purchase.
  2. You receive an activation profile, usually a QR code and manual details.
  3. Your phone installs the profile over Wi-Fi and adds a new cellular line.
  4. You select the eSIM for mobile data and connect to a local network.

Why travelers use eSIM

  • Get online on arrival. Install before you fly, then switch on when you land.
  • Skip roaming surprises with a plan that has a fixed price and validity.
  • Keep your home number for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data.
  • No shop visits, ID queues or tiny cards to lose.
  • Cover one country, a region or several destinations with a single plan.

What you need

  • A phone that supports eSIM. See our compatible devices guide.
  • A phone that is not locked to one carrier.
  • A Wi-Fi or data connection to download the plan.
